City Club of
  San Diego events.

The City Club of San Diego is dedicated to the dialogue of democracy. That core belief was present at The City Club's inception and remains, 32 years later, a fundamental principle of this organization. In faithful observance of that ideal, The City Club has presented more than 850 programs in the public interest.

In 2006 The City Club offered 28 programs. We began the year with Price Waterhouse Chairman & CEO Dennis Nally and ended with Lynn Sherr of ABC’s 20/20. We also had the privilege of hearing from FBI Director Robert Mueller, Houston Mayor Bill White, former United States Senator George McGovern, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, Atlantic Monthly correspondent James Fallows, New York Times Military Correspondent Michael Gordon, Shell Oil President John Hofmeister, former Texas Lt. Governor Ben Barnes, American Petroleum President & CEO Red Cavaney, former United Senator Gary Hart, evangelist Tony Campolo, New Republic Editor-at-Large Peter Beinhart, and the Comptroller General of the United States, David Walker.

In past years City Club programs have included: Bill Press of CNN, famed Harvard University men’s choral group, the Din & Tonics; The Very Reverend John Chane, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, D.C.; Francois Bujon de L'Estang, France's Ambassador to the United States; Bill Simon, Republican candidate for Governor of California; Jerry Brown, the Mayor of Oakland and former Governor of California; Richard Reeves, celebrated biographer of presidents; David Broder of The Washington Post, one of the nation’s most admired journalists; Michael Barnes, former Congressman and President of Handgun Control; Michael Deaver, former key aide to President Ronald Reagan; Sidney Taurel, Chairman & CEO of Eli Lilly; Ray Gilmartin, Chairman & CEO of Merck, and Paul Theroux, one of the nation's most celebrated writers, who was featured as part of The Great American Writers Series.

The evidence of The City Club's commitment to a broad discussion of public issues is most striking when you compare some of those who have appeared in past years: President Jimmy Carter and House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Senator Ted Kennedy and presidential candidate Patrick Buchanan, Moral Majority leader Jerry Falwell and celebrated feminist Gloria Steinem, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Colin Powell and Colonel Oliver North.

The above underscores why The City Club of San Diego was recently rated the third best public forum in America.
